Most people traveling to the Historic Town of Sandwich don’t realize that while the town encompasses one mile of the Cape Cod Canal the rest of the canal belongs to the Town of Bourne. Both Upper Cape Towns are home to the twin spans known as the Bourne and Sagamore Bridges.
Our 2023 ornament is made of original hand-blown glass created by the McDermott Glass Studio. The image of the sun setting over the iconic bridge symbolizes a site that is well-known all over the world. Each individual commemorative ornament is numbered and engraved by the artist and sponsored by Almeida and Carlson Insurance. Driving the highway to the Cape Cod bridges brings a tug to one's heartstrings as it represents a homecoming to folks who have traveled both near and far. New arrivals to Cape Cod experience a flutter of anticipation and excitement as they look forward to visiting the quaint seaside towns. The impressive views from the bridges reveal over 600 ft. of archway above and fast-moving canal water flowing below the spans. It makes one realize the important role of the bridges in the growth of Cape Cod. The US Army Corps of Engineers purchased the canal in March 1928 and commissioned the bridges to be built. It was during the Depression and the bridges were built by the Works Progress Program (WPA.) This world-famous destination had its start when the bridges were first completed in 1935 connecting Cape Cod to the mainland. One could only wonder if the builders could have imagined how the two structures would age from years of growing popularity and use. The needs of the Cape have grown exponentially with the passing decades. Today plans are underway to replace the old twin bridges with new structures. |
