Community Coming Together
Café Chew is planning to reopen its doors this spring after an electrical fire in the basement caused smoke damage throughout the building on February 14. Café Chew owner James Barber said no one was inside the restaurant in Merchants Square when the fire started at around 7 PM. A tenant who lives above the restaurant called the fire department when her alarm, which is connected to Café Chew’s alarm, began to sound. “It was such a shock to everybody,” Mr. Barber said. Mr. Barber said he is currently working to make repairs caused by smoke damage, including redoing the basement and repairing areas of the dining room. Deputy Fire Chief Sean Butler said the fire caused no structural damage to the building but a heating system near where the fire started will need to be fixed. Deputy Chief Butler estimates repairs will cost around $25,000. The public adjuster and insurance company are still working on assessing the damage. Mr. Barber said he plans to start demolition next week. The fire also caused smoke damage in the basement of neighboring business, Wish Gift Co. “We are still standing,” Wish Gift owner Penny Sampson said. Ms. Sampson is aiming to reopen Wish Gift within a month. Mr. Barber said he is grateful to the fire department for its quick response and that the biggest priority since the fire has been the employees of Café Chew. "We’ve worked creatively to retain our employees and our employees have been awesome and supportive,” Mr. Barber said. “I think we are all looking forward to getting back to work.”
