Cape Symphony Orchestra to Perform “To The Sea”

Cape Symphony Music Director candidate James Blachly will conduct
WEST BARNSTABLE, MA —May 27, 2025

The Cape Symphony Orchestra will present “To The Sea,” the final concert of its 2024/25 season, on June 14 and 15 at the Barnstable Performing Arts Center. Music Director candidate James Blachly will conduct an ocean-inspired program of masterworks by Maurice Ravel, Toru Takemitsu, and Ralph Vaughan Williams. The Metropolitan Chorale of Brookline, soprano Sonja Tengblad, and baritone Bradford Gleim will perform with the Orchestra.

Each Cape Symphony Masterpiece series concert this season has been led by a candidate to be the Symphony’s next Music Director. Grammy®-winning conductor and composer James Blachly is dedicated to enriching the concert experience by connecting with audiences in meaningful ways. He is Music Director of the Johnstown Symphony Orchestra, and a versatile guest conductor with such orchestras as the New York Philharmonic, Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and Carnegie Mellon Philharmonic.

The Metropolitan Chorale of Brookline will join the Orchestra for Vaughan Williams’s Sea Symphony. “Sea Symphony is a true love letter to the sea and to all who share that love,” says James Blachly. “While it is expansive and exultant, it is also a memorial for lives lost, with the journey across the ocean a powerful metaphor for life.”

Described as “radiant” by Opera magazine, Sonja Tengblad has performed with A Far Cry, the Boston Philharmonic, the Boston Landmarks Orchestra, Boston Baroque, the Handel + Haydn Society, and many others. A champion of new music, she co-curated Modern Dickinson, featuring 21st century settings of Emily Dickinson’s poetry. She teaches at Wellesley College and Harvard University.

Bradford Gleim, praised by The Boston Globe for his “brilliant delivery,” performs with ensembles including the Handel + Haydn Society, Tage Alter Musik, Boston Baroque, San Francisco Early Music Society, Emmanuel Music, and The Borromeo String Quartet, to name a few. He is Artistic Advisor to the Renaissance music ensemble Cut Circle, and teaches at Harvard University, Brown University, and Berklee College of Music.

Cape Symphony welcomes audience involvement in its Music Director search. The public may observe James Blachly in rehearsal with the Orchestra from 6:30 – 8:30 PM Thursday, June 12 at the Barnstable Performing Arts Center. Concert ticketholders are also invited to a Q&A session led by Assistant Conductor Joe Marchio one hour before each performance. Open rehearsal and/or concert attendees are encouraged to convey their thoughts through a survey to be emailed the following week.

“To The Sea” will be performed Saturday, June 14 at 7:30 PM and Sunday, June 15 at 3:00 PM at the Barnstable Performing Arts Center, 744 West Main Street, Hyannis.
