To summarize, the general duties and responsibilities of the Executive Director are to conduct the business of the Sandwich Chamber of Commerce as directed by the Board of Directors.

These duties include, but are not limited to functions such as:

  • Conduct official correspondence, preserve all books, documents and other forms of communication, keep books of account and maintain the accurate record of proceedings of the Chambers' Board of Directors and all committees.

  • Perform all duties incident to the office or as prescribed by the Board of Directors. Prepare and give a monthly activity report relative to past and planned activities.

  • Supervise the maintenance of all records, preparation of reports, collection of revenues and expenditures against the budget.

  • Work with elected officers and directors in overall policy determination and administration of the Chamber program including: supervising staff hiring, training, coordinating and counseling, prepare job descriptions, organization chart, office policy and procedure manual. With proper approval, employ and supervise the staff necessary to carry on the work of the organization, and fix their compensation within the limits set by the Board of Directors or Executive Committee.

  • Act as fiscal officer, keeping check on monthly income and expenditures on a basis of forecast and actual performance. Prepare annual budget for review of Executive Committee and the Board of Directors.

  • Maintain operating network with all Chamber committees and be aware of current status of all Chamber projects in relation to original objective, and work yet to be done.

  • Maintain operating network with community leaders in business, professional and political fields to determine complementary needs, attitudes, issues, and interests

  • Be constantly alert for, and solicit information pertinent to community problems and opportunities, and bring them to the attention of the proper agency, or group, or individual.

  • Be generally familiar with what is going on in the community. Maintain working knowledge of all other organizations in the community, their programs and leadership.

  • Become an integral member of the community "grapevine" to keep current on community and civic trends and new developments nationwide, so that local community positions may be constantly analyzed and checked against what other towns are doing.

  • Represent local Chamber at various state, regional, national, and in the case of tourism, international meetings, conferences and trade shows as directed by the Board.

  • Keep contact with the membership through preparation of monthly event calendars and newsletters, etc.

  • Work with committees and groups, either directly or in supportive role, and be constantly alert for new leadership and volunteers for the Chamber.

  • Assume responsibility for an annual personal performance review with the Board of Directors of these duties and responsibilities.
